Most schools in the Mesa and Phoenix areas are already out and the triple-digit heat looks like it’s here to stay. For many, that means it is time for the yearly summer vacation.
As you are packing for your getaway to beat the heat this summer, don’t forget to prepare your home, as well. These five tips will help you save money on energy costs while you’re away.
There’s no reason to pay for air conditioning when no one is home. Before you leave, turn up the temperature on your thermostat to about 85 degrees.
Worried about coming home to a hot home? Have a trusted neighbor turn it down for you before you arrive or install a communicating thermostat that allows you to change your home’s thermostat settings from anywhere on your smartphone, tablet or other web-enabled device.
You don’t want to pay to light your home unnecessarily, so make sure all your lights are off when you leave. Also, for additional security, it is a good idea to put your lights on a timer so they turn on and off as if someone was home.
Many electronic devices such as televisions and computers pull electricity even when turned off. While you are gone, unplug all your electronics to save on utility costs.
Besides providing security for your home while you are gone, making sure all your doors and windows are shut tight will prevent hot air from coming into your home and making your air conditioner work harder than it needs to.
With these five tips, your summer vacation can also be a vacation from your energy bills.
